Bryen followed quickly behind Ahrissa. Even on war torn
Onderon, he couldn’t recall slums that reminded him of this place. Sure there
were people who lived beneath the poverty line on Corellia, sure he even dealt
with them as part of his duties with CorSec, but they weren’t quite so
The gang situation was also something that was foreign to
Bryen. He knew they existed on Corellia as well, but that was not part of his
assignments, unless they hit something really big and then it was more of a
military assignment than a peace keeping mission. Bryen suspected that no
matter how powerful the locals feared the gangs to be, that a robed Jedi with a
lightsaber at their side would probably deter any direct assaults. They were
likely relatively safe in the area where most would feel exposed.
Then of course there was the event that was the protests.
Some of the protesters seemed to be better armed than they were clothed.
Something that baffled Bryen, but apparently some places required security more
so than warmth and other things provided by basic shelter and clothes. As the
protesters surged on the building that seemed the focus of their protests,
Bryen’s hand fell to his weapon. A well placed armed Jedi might do well to
subdue the crowd, but it might also egg them on.
Finally, Bryen noticed the woman that seemed a bit out of
place. He nodded towards her, “You think that might be our informant, Master?”

The Jedi Padawan silently took the abuse from the older
woman. Some of the suggestions were lessons he had already learned. Some were
mistakes that he knew he had made, and was likely to make again, but each time
she wagged a finger at Bryen and gave him advice as to what he should do he
gave a polite nod and allowed her rant to continue. He did wonder if she was
picking on him just because he was the youngest or if the men that the local
authorities had truly sent junior investigators on a case that had an entire
section of their populous in fear for their lives. He gave the woman another
look and decided that in all likelihood everyone was young to her.
“You say that no one knows those tunnels like you,” Bryen
started trying to take a few of the woman’s tips in mind. He would prefer
someone to lead them through the tunnels rather than depending completely on
the Force to guide them. “And you said that you armed yourself and chased this
murderer down once. Why would you do such a thing? Doesn’t that go against your
advice to ‘think’? That man by all accounts has killed numerous people, what
made you think that you would be safe?”
In truth Bryen had no doubt that the woman had thought
out her actions very carefully, but questioning someone’s actions usually put
them on the defensive which he hoped would lead to her revealing more about the
murderer they followed than she had given to the investigators in a calm
guarded approach, a flustered interviewee always seemed to give up more than a

To call the woman odd was an understatement in Bryen’s
estimations. But he had to admit that someone who knew where the tunnel’s traps
lay was a lot better than taking the information and hoping the Force would
warn them of the upcoming dangers. Besides, something told Bryen that there was
much more to the woman than it appeared. His Master almost seemed to hesitate as she
asked Aggbudbuderia for aid, Bryen didn’t blame her in the least.
Bryen didn’t know whether to be thankful or worried when
the woman who had plenty of advise to doll out to him accepted Ahrissa’s
request to aid them in navigation of the tunnels. Sure it would be a lot safer
with a guide, but the young Jedi wasn’t sure how much more advice he could
take. Aggbudberia had to have been a veteran or at least known of or
participated in the resistance during the war, and she did know how to hide a
weapon pretty effectively. Bryen would make the assumption that she knew how to
use it as well, but hoped it wouldn’t come to that. The fact that she seemed to
take security in the presence of the Jedi was another positive. She knew what
they were capable of so hopefully she would stick to her role of guide and
allow Ahrissa and Bryen could handle any fighting and detaining their suspect.
Bryen took hold of the chair and sign that the older
woman requested he take. He almost grumbled something about how the stuff got
to the protest to begin with, but buried the thought and merely waited for his
Master and Aggbudbuderia to take the lead.

Bryen was quite uneasy doing the chores of the old woman.
He knew that she was a valuable part of getting to the criminal in time to save
the little girl, but well the young Jedi just sorta felt used. Thankfully it didn’t
take long for them to trade out protesting equipment for tunnel foraging stuff.
Bryen’s eyes drifted over the apartment as he tried to resist vocalizing his
desire to hurry things along. He noted what seemed like many photos on the wall
depicting the woman with several different groups of people. He also noted the
citation of valor that the woman didn’t seem to think very highly of, but the
fact that she received it told Bryen that he may have underestimated her.
Properly outfit in attire and ammo, the woman made one
last addition to their equipment, schematics she said. For a moment Bryen
wondered if bringing her along was prudent if they had access to the plans of
the tunnels, but then he remembered the traps. Not everything could be written
onto paper. If she knew the traps and tunnels as well as she claimed, Aggie was
still needed. When Aggie declared herself ready they were off, and none too
soon for Bryen’s taste.
The scenes of the Sith District were no longer surprising
to the young Jedi, but he still considered them a shame. How a government could
let so many live like this was beyond Bryen. What was surprising was the number
of people that seemed to group together. He had heard of the gangs, but those types
didn’t usually go out in the numbers that they seemed to here today. No it wasn’t
a product of the area that these people clustered, it was for protection from
one man, a man that they were on the tail of.
Aggie lifted the plate from their entrance into the
sewers and as she took in the smell as if it were the fumes of her favorite
meal cooking in the oven, Bryen’s nose wrinkled and he fought the desire to
cover his face with his robes. He looked over at his Master as the woman
started down the ladder. “Well I guess we’re heading down there. I’ll take the

Speaking was not something that Bryen had intended to do
much of. He was training to become more than just a warrior. Leaning on some of
the skills learned as a CorSec agent and adding to them Force powers, the Order
called this manner of Jedi a Shadow. Bryen thought it quite apt and he intended
to travel through these tunnels as just that a shadow. Aggie continued her
talking. It didn’t bother Bryen that much. He tried to use the Force to track
the sounds as they bounced about hoping he might be able to do the same if
something should happen to overpower Aggie’s voice.
They came to a fork in the road. Bryen felt the agitation
in his Master and slunk back into a shadowed corner tapping his feet silently
so as to try and not add to the anxiety by giving the old woman a witty quip.
As he waited he reflected on the type of person who would choose to live down
there. For a criminal it made sense, no one wanted to venture too deep, but for
someone just wanting to be out of society there had to be a better place to
Finally Aggie made her decision. Bryen could feel the
anxiety in it, but didn’t blame her for not remembering which of the two
identical tunnels was used several days ago. Bryen tensed before the sound even
hit his ears. He had focused on the Force and attempting to remain as
untraceable as possible while accepting all clues that the Force would send
towards him. “Trap” was not enough information, but he heard the flow of water
and guessed that would have something to do with the trap.
Bryen quickly acted grabbing a hold of Aggie as Ahrissa
pushed the older woman towards him. He felt the focus of his Master as he saw
water pouring around them over the bubble that Ahrissa had created. The strain
of holding off the water was building in Ahrissa and Bryen knew that it wouldn’t
be long before the bubble failed.
Bryen heard the current of electricity and had a very bad
feeling. If that downpour of water had landed on their heads the current would
rush through their bodies causing untold injuries. “We need to move,” Bryen
called out. He pressed out with the Force causing a wave of energy to cleave
through the water. “Follow me,” he said as he started forward. “What’s the area
of effect of this trap?” Aggie was supposed to know where the traps were. The
fact that she missed this one was something that Bryen would not hold against
them, but knowing exactly what it could do would be valuable.

Bryen felt only a trickle of the electricity that was
meant to at the very least disable trespassers. Aggie let it out that the trap
was built for armored Sith troops, he wondered what it would do to an unarmored
woman such as Aggie. Bryen and Ahrissa would have called on the Force to see
them through, but had they not acted quickly their tunnel adventuring would
have been over for the moment at least.
Bryen looked at Aggie and thought to point some fun at
the look her hair gave, but then thought to reach to his own first. His long
usually straight hair was sticking out in every direction and had a slight wave
to it at the moment. He tried to straighten it out, but eventually settled for
lifting the cowl of his robes and allowing the cloth to force his hair into
He smiled at the apology offered by Aggie, “Simple
mistake, all these tunnels look the same to me.” Now that trouble seemed to
have abated the young Jedi took a series of short breaths. “So we head back to
the fork and take the other tunnel then? And if we can avoid traps that even
when avoided leave aesthetically displeasing side effects that would be
appreciated,” the last part was emphasized with a chuckle.

“Jedi are just people with certain gifts,” Bryen said as
Aggie seemed to question their ability to enjoy life. “I know that we remove
certain things from our lives that make us seem like we wouldn’t be good at a
party, but we need to let go sometimes as well.” He gave Ahrissa a sideways
glance wondering if his Master would agree with his assessment, he guessed that
Bryen listened to Aggie’s story of the kid who had lived
in the sewers, socially limited because of the fact that he was discarded. He
had a new found respect for his father and the Order for keeping children safe
and amongst others. The young Jedi couldn’t imagine fending for himself in
childhood even with his abilities and how being forced to would have affected
his outlook on things.
Bryen fell back in behind Aggie and Ahrissa as they
started down the correct tunnel and froze as he heard the voice. He was teasing
them. He was looking for attention, as long as they stayed alert there were no
shadows in these sewers that would hide him. The Force would show them what he
wanted them to see anyways. Even as Bryen thought of those possibilities he
felt Ahrissa reaching out, concentrating on the voice. Ahrissa was doing what
Aggie said couldn’t be done. She was tracking him. Not in a manner that any “normal”
person would understand though. Bryen thought of adding his own awareness to
Ahrissa’s but decided to keep his focus wide, there were other things that
could harm them in these tunnels than just the murderer. While Ahrissa sought
him out Bryen would keep his awareness focused on keeping her safe. “For now
his lair is the best plan, but remember that we can see and hear and feel
things that you cannot. The plan is good, we stick to the plan…for now.” He waved
her to continue and remained in the rear of the party.
